Elevate Your Backyard Space in Five Easy Steps

Is your backyard looking and feeling a bit drab? After the summer has passed and the flowers have disappeared, it’s common to start planning how to improve the backyard space next year, and, if you want to give it a facelift that will stand the test of time, here are some simple ways to do it.

1. Fence Your Pool

Do you have a garden pool? If you do, one way to improve look of your backyard is to fence it. A glass pool fence will provide a simple barrier for the pool and also offer a modern look, without blocking a visual line it, making this an ideal option for families with young children.

2. Lighting

A dark backyard may not seem like a big deal in the colder, winter months, but come spring and summer, it can quickly make your backyard feel uninviting.

So, if you want to brighten your garden, you can invest in LED string lights or even solar-powered lanterns to line pathways or to brighten seating areas. This will be a boon in the summer months if you’re throwing a party or barbecue and will also provide a relaxing ambience for you on those warmer, longer nights.

3. Plant Boxes

Also known as raised beds, these have become extremely popular in the last few years and are no longer relegated to growing vegetables alone. Many of the most visually striking backyards have plant boxes or raised beds along the sides of paths, as they create a visual division between growing areas and other areas. You can even paint them green or varnish them to help create a cohesive theme that will bring your whole backyard together. Just make sure that they’re reinforced, as the weight of the soil can cause them to break open if they aren’t properly lined and supported.

4. Seating Areas

If you don’t have a seating area, now’s the time to choose the right location for one and get some high-quality garden furniture so you can enjoy it.

Many people opt to have their seating areas in a shaded spot, as they don’t need to spend extra money on a parasol or awning. If you can, also try to get some outdoor furniture coverings to protect the seating in the winter months, and, in the spring and summer, try to get some soft furnishings for these seats, such as outdoor pillows and throws. It will really elevate the look of the space and will give you somewhere cozy to sit.

5. No More Bare Fences

There’s nothing more boring and unappealing than a bare fence, and if you own your home, there’s no reason that it has to stay that way.

If you want to add a pop of greenery to your backyard and have noted that the fence looks bare, start looking into trellises and climbing plants. Popular options include honeysuckle, wisteria, jasmine, and clematis. These will create an interwoven look and produce beautiful flowers in the spring through to the summer. A wisteria tree can grow quickly, though, so be sure to have a large area dedicated to this plant and its drooping (but stunning and fragrant) flowers.
